As more nurse practitioner and nurse midwifery programs evolve to include distance education as a format for teaching there has been concern about maintaining educational standards and incorporating new, successful methods to the process. There has been little research of distance education of nurse practitioners and nurse midwives. Formative assessment has been considered a valuable pedagogical method, but there has been no research of it for nurse practitioner or nurse midwifery education, in either traditional or distance format. To counter this, a small study of formative assessment was completed for one group of nurse practitioner and nurse midwifery students at a distance education program. A variety of formative assessment exercises were applied.
